Reality Check?
Technology “Reality Check” Discussion Series?
Concerned about technology that sounds great but has hidden costs? Wondering what really happens in a class using emerging instructional technologies? HCTD might take an opportunity to address the technology hype cycle and the reality of implementing new teaching technologies. The Division could offer a discussion panel or two (call them Round Tables if appropriate) every NCA which provides a "reality check" on many of the gee whiz technologies that people hear about, focusing on research and experience-based evaluation that would present a fuller and richer picture of the possibilities and limitations of educational technologies.
The downside of vendor hype comes at a terrible cost of frustration, diminished educational experiences for students and faculty, and at times a wholesale rejection of technology based on high expectations and subsequent negative experiences. Whether it be personal response systems (clickers), blogs, podcasting, plagiarism detection, learning management systems, classroom capture for streaming, or the like, a regular forum on the intersection of theory, research and experience seems worthwhile. Many of us are fond users of educational technologies, but have likely made some mistakes and learned some valuable lessons using technology in our courses, which might be a source of insight and an impetus for effective use through a discussion forum.
If possible, this idea could be considered by the Division officers and members at the next Division meeting in November 2007. To share ideas or express support, feel free to contact Star Muir, smuir@gmu.edu, 703-993-2939.
