Sumitra Srinivasan, HCTD Secretary

sumitra Dr. Sumitra Srinivasan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Toledo. She received her B. Sc. in Physics from Stella Maris College, her M.A. in Communication from the University of Madras, her M.S. in Television-Radio-Film from Newhouse School of Public Communication, Syracuse University and her Ph. D. in Communication from Georgia State University. She also holds a graduate diploma in Computer Science and Information Technology and was certified as Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD). Her industry experience includes working in the fields of journalism, market research and multimedia production.

Dr. Srinivasan teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in News Writing, Communication Theory/Research, New Media, International/cultural Communication. Her research interests include Open-Source Media; International Journalism; New Media Technologies; Environmental Communication; Globalization, Culture and Technology; Telecommunication Law and Policy; and History of Technology.

Michelle Calka, Student Representativemichelle

Michelle Calka received her B.A. in 2004 in Digital Media Studies from Juniata College, and her M.A. in Digital Storytelling from Ball State University in 2006, where she
completed a qualitative thesis on factors of immersion in virtual game
environments, specifically World of Warcraft. She then moved to Chicago, where she
worked as a data warehousing consultant before coming to Ohio University for her Ph.D.

Her research interests are interdisciplinary and varied, but are primarily
focused in the area of computer-mediated communication; specifically, she is
interested in the role of communication in social integration, community
building, and emergent behavior in Massively Multiplayer Online Games. Her other
research interests include visual rhetoric in Northern Ireland, narrative
theory, and hypertext.
